Description
Pictured items for the top shelf of the Doctor’s Bag display include, at the center, Dr. Cyrus Culver’s black, multi-compartment Obstetrician’s leather Bag (circa 1940s) donated by Celia Rutt. Through the opened bag the Bowles type stethoscope with acoustical bell chest piece is typically the first item out of the bag at a patient visit. Also prominent is the Taylor percussion hammer for testing reflexes. Also visible within the bag are an assortment of uterine sounds for cervical dilation and male urethra dilators. The yellow box stands out as well. It contains black twist silk eye sutures with a 5/8-inch needle. Clearly Dr. Culver was prepared for a variety of patients. To the right of the bag additional contents include, at the upper right, include a Welch-Allen case with a otoscope, ophthalmoscope and a green battery handle. These instruments illuminated the examination of the ears, nose and throat. Just below is a small leather case from Lilly Pharmaceuticals including a wide variety of both oral and injectable medications for quick administration. An orange 9 cc. vial of Tincture of Merthiolate, for wound treatment is also included. At the lower right is a small box of stainless-steel Hypodermic needles. Finally, on the left side is a Urine Sugar test case for managing the or diagnosing diabetic patient. Another box of “Rustless” Hypodermic needles – 19-gauge 1.5-inch length, is visible on the lower left. Needles of this era were reusable after sterilization.
