Description
The three capes displayed on the western wall of the Museum are typical of the uniform development for nurses in the 19th century to about the late 1970s. Capes were worn outside the Hospital or clinic to protect the nurse from inclement weather. They were typically made of wool. The violet cape, to the left, was donated by a graduate of the Niagara University College of Nursing with a distinctive N.U.C.N. on the collar. The blue-grey cape, in the middle, was donated by a graduate of the Reading (PA) School of Nursing. The manufacturer of this cape was a distinguished supplier of Union Military Uniforms during the Civil War. Finally, the far-left cape was from the Jackson Memorial Hospital School of Nursing with a distinctive J.M.H. initials on the collar. The owner stated they wore this cape when they did their Psychiatric rotation in Baltimore, MD, not Miami!
