Description
This Sigmoidoscope, manufactured by the Olympus Endoscopy division (circa 2005-10) is a precision fiberoptic flexible endoscope designed to examine the lower third of the colon. A sigmoidoscopy may also be used to take a tissue sample or biopsy. This instrument can be used to remove polyps or hemorrhoids (swollen veins in your rectum and anus). It is also a screening test for colon cancer and rectal cancer. It’s advantage over Colonoscopy is it requires minimal to no anesthesia for the procedure. This item was retired from surgical practice and donated to the Museum as an educational artifact.
