    Description

"La Grand" Chambre des Povres, The great Room of the Poor, is believed to be the world's oldest edifice to be in continuous use as a hospital. Today, although combined with a modern hospital, it carefully preserves the atmosphere of the 15th century. The medieval times are often regarded as a period of sterility of inertia; however, out of this troubled millennium (500-1500) came a significant contribution to the welfare of mankind: the hospital. Sisters of the Congregation Sainte Marthe, garbed in the traditional habits of their ancient order, have cared for the sick, the aged, and the indigent in this hospital for more than 500 years.
