Description
Suśruta was an ancient Indian physician and surgeon who made significant contributions to the field of plastic and cataract surgery. In this image he is performing an otoplastic operation. The patient, drugged with wine, is steadied by friends and relatives. He will use a section of flesh cut from the patients cheek to reconstruct the ear. Details of this procedure and Suśruta's surgical instruments are found in Suśruta's Compendium, considered to be one of the most important surviving ancient treatises on medicine.
