Description
Andreas Vasalius of Brussels, the first great teacher of anatomy from natural observations, conducted many demonstrations as pictured in this illustration. Basing his observations on dissections he made himself, he wrote and illustrated the first comprehensive textbooks of anatomy, The Seven Books on the Structure of the Human Body. Though reviled and ridiculed by scholars of Galen, Vesalius' works, backed by the popular anatomical dissecting demonstrations, some overcame detractors and his works became classic in medical literature.
