Description

The 3rd shelf is primarily devoted to Nursing Education and Tradition. The left side of the third shelf provides examples of The American Journal of Nursing from the 1930s identifying research and best practices in Nursing. Also displayed are three representative textbooks of Nursing Practice from the 1950s and 1960s.

From the 1800s through the 20th century the Nursing cap was a distinctive symbol of both the student and graduate Nurse. Each unique cap represented a particular Nursing School or College. The first cap depicted is from an Edison Community College graduate, Fran Houghton, RN who graduated in 1978 and worked primarily on the I.V. Team at three Lee Health Hospitals for 40 years. At the center is a traditional-looking Nursing Cap from the South Chicago Community Hospital School of Nursing (Class of 1965) donated by Donna Ramirez, BSN, RN, NCSN.  Another Nursing Cap from 1980 Edison Community College Grad., Toni Rae Davis Mather, RN.  She provides an anecdotal history of her tradition of always wearing her cap throughout the many phases of her career. An excerpt from a published Fort Myers News- Press advertisement, for which she is featured, appears to the right of her storyboard.

Finally, at the far-right is an artist rendering of the first Nursing Cap for Edison (1968) drawn in 1979 for the 10-year anniversary of a Nursing graduating class. Below the image is a storyboard depicting the “Blue stripe” on the cap for Nursing students followed by the Black stripe, added to the cap after graduation, when the RN credential was earned.
